MoD & BEL in pact for air defence radars

In a major boost to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Friday signed a ₹2,000 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) for the supply of state-of-the-art Air Defence Fire Control Radars for the Indian Army.

The agreement, signed under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)’ category, was formalised in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi, according to an official release.

The advanced Fire Control Radars are designed to detect a wide range of airborne threats including fighter jets, attack helicopters, and enemy drones—thereby significantly enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Army’s Air Defence Regiments.

Crucially, the radars will incorporate a minimum of 70% indigenous content, reflecting a strong commitment to domestic defence manufacturing. The project is expected to mark a substantial step in the ongoing modernisation of India’s air defence capabilities while simultaneously contributing to national economic growth.

The deal is also set to empower India’s defence ecosystem by fostering greater participation of Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in the areas of components manufacturing and raw material supply.

The procurement deal reinforces the government’s strategic vision of bolstering indigenous defence capabilities and minimizing dependence on imports by advancing homegrown innovation and manufacturing.
