He inaugurated the 8th edition of ‘Windergy India 2026’ in Chennai on Thursday. C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, Minister for Energy Resources and Law, Government of Tamil Nadu also graced the inaugural ceremony.
“India’s wind energy sector has demonstrated strong momentum, with the highest-ever annual installation of 6.05 GW achieved in FY2026. We are confident that annual wind energy installations will surpass this record in FY2027, marking another important milestone in India’s wind energy journey. This continued growth will strengthen the foundation for achieving our national ambition of 100 GW of installed wind energy capacity by 2030,” Joshi said.
Annual installations expected to reach 8GW in FY26-27, he said.
The strong project pipeline and policy support would help the sector move towards the government’s 100 GW installed wind capacity by 2030, the Union Minister added.
And the sector is projected to reach around 107 GW by 2030-203., he noted.
Joshi also noted that the Rs 1.86 Lakh crore Green Energy corridor will strengthen transmission infrastructure and support India’s goal of 900 GW of non – fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
He noted that Rs 6000 crore has been allocated for battery storage systems.
With new capacities being added at a faster pace, the government is also focusing on reposing ageing wind turbines to further strengthen the sector’s growth.
Nirmal Kumar highlighted the state’s pivotal role in wind energy development and the proactive steps taken to promote new initiatives, such as the state repowering policy.
Meanwhile speaking at another event on Wednesday, he said Tamil Nadu is targeting rooftop solar installations in 1 lakh households by March 2027.
The Tamil Nadu government is focusing on accelerating adoption and increasing the number through a new online portal, which helps in tracking the applications and reducing the delays in approvals and meter installations. The portal will also enable the government to monitor applications at different stages and identify delays at the field and electricity-board levels.
Speaking at the stakeholder discussion event on Tamil Nadu Solar Rooftop Program, Nirmal Kumar said, “In the last two to three weeks, the state received almost 20,000 applications for domestic rooftop solar.”
The Government of Tamil Nadu, a few weeks ago, announced that households setting up rooftop solar will be given a subsidy up to Rs 22,000.
The state has also disbursed its subsidy to the first 1,500 beneficiaries after the Centre’s subsidy was received, said the Minister.
He said rising solar capacity could leave the state with surplus power during the day that cannot be fully utilised, making storage important for shifting renewable power to periods of higher demand, including night-time.
To tackle this, a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) policy will also be launched within the next 10 days, the Minister said.
Nirmal Kumar also said that the government is also working on better planning of solar and wind projects based on resource availability, while moving towards digital monitoring of renewable-energy applications.
