The New Normal post- Covid-19 IE 53
On 15 March IE entered its 54th year of publication. We look back with satisfaction to our contributions to expanding awareness on economic issues through these years. We have had the opportunity to observe, analyse and comment on the momentous happenings of the past five decades and more. We based our reports on close interactions with policymakers and leaders in different sectors, supplemented by visits to hundreds of projects spread across the country and in several other countries and institutions backed by research and analysis.
The opportunity to interact with policymakers in Delhi at the annual Economic Editors’ Conferences from 1973 and our special issues on several states interacting with chief ministers and senior policymakers were features unique to IE. Our focus encompassed subjects varied from agriculture and atomic energy to oil, steel, travel and tourism… In these we also presented well-researched features on social sectors including education and public health.
We have also been presenting special lectures by leaders in several sectors as also conducting seminars on current and emerging issues. On 15 March 2018, as part of our golden jubilee, we had day-long seminars addressed by over 40 specialists drawn from India and abroad on the theme India 2030. These were presented in association with the Government of Tamil Nadu, CII and McKinsey & Co.
The country had been through an unusual and unprecedented year of Covid-19 pandemic. This has seriously impacted nations across the globe. For over 12 months there has been the pressure to cope with the exacting demands of dealing with the pandemic. There had been tectonic shifts in the way we lived. Therefore, we have taken the theme of this issue as The New Normal post-Covid-19.
We present in this issue several experts sharing their views on the lessons learnt from the pandemic and also looking ahead on the shape of things to come:
We are presenting in a virtual seminar policymakers, scientists and leaders from different sectors on The New Normal. A detailed programme sheet has been published in page 58.
IE has been releasing its digital issues in the last couple of years. IE plans to step up the pace of digitalisation.
IE plans a more solid, new structure to the publication. We are working in association with several leading public men on setting up a not-for-profit foundation, with a sizeable corpus, to be managed by a young team of professionals. These will be mentored by public spirited leaders. There will also be the focus to train young men and women in economic journalism. We welcome your esteemed views on taking the IE mission forward.
