Wave of Public Companies

Tamil Nadu is one of India’s strongest industrial states, with a deep and diversified base spanning automobiles, engineering, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and consumer products. Over decades, Tamil Nadu businesses have grown into national and global companies, creating enduring value for investors.

For long, the stock market representation has been concentrated in a handful of names like TVS Motor, Tube Investments, Sundaram Finance, Shriram Finance, Cholamandalam Investment & Finance, Lakshmi Machine Works, Ramco Cements, Carborundum Universal, Thangamayil Jewellery and KPR Mill. Now, slowly but steadily, more Tamil Nadu companies are entering the IPO market, signalling a broader pipeline of businesses ready for public markets.

Increasing awareness of southern companies
The post-2020 period has been particularly interesting. Several Tamil Nadu-based companies have entered the main board, representing a wide range of sectors. Computer Age Management Services (CAMS) entered the market in 2020 in the financial services sector, followed by Go Fashion (Go Colors), Star Health & Allied Insurance, Aptus Value Housing Finance and Chemplast Sanmar in 2021. Five-Star Business Finance and Archean Chemical Industries followed in 2022. More recently, Hyundai Motor India entered the market in 2024, while Dr. Agarwal’s Health Care and Tenneco Clean Air India added healthcare and engineering to the list in 2025. This shows how the state’s listed-company ecosystem is becoming increasingly diverse. Many of these companies are not coming to the market as new businesses. They have already spent years building products, customers, distribution networks, brands and operational capabilities.

One recent example is Milky Mist Dairy Food, founded in Erode. Instead of focusing primarily on liquid milk, the company has built its business around value-added dairy products such as paneer, cheese, Greek yogurt, butter and ghee. This represents the transformation of a regional dairy business into a broader consumer brand expanding with a national footprint.

Upcoming candidates for public
Another established regional business which approached the public markets is Lalithaa Jewellery Mart, which was established in Chennai in 1985. The company is looking towards the capital markets to support its next phase of expansion. This highlights an important point: for businesses such as Milky Mist and Lalithaa Jewellery, the IPO is not the beginning of the business journey; it is a milestone in a much longer journey of building and scaling the enterprise.

The real success will not be measured by how many companies Tamil Nadu brings to the stock market, but by how many of them go on to become durable, profitable and sustainable wealth creators. An IPO provides access to capital, visibility and a larger investor base, but long-term shareholder value will ultimately depend on execution, governance, capital allocation and the ability to compound the business over many years.
