Women forge ahead

Listen to this article

The top three ranks in the recent civil services examination have been secured by women. Of the top 25 rank holders, 10 are women.

This news come on top of the recent surge in women employment we reported in our special issue Turbocharged Tamil Nadu released in April. In extensive visits that covered over 40 iconic projects of Tamil Nadu, we found a welcome focus on women employment, especially in hi-tech emerging industries like high-end electronics, solar power, electric vehicles, even in engineering units.

The Tata Electronics project commits 85 per cent of total workforce to comprise of women. Such high percentage of women is also seen in the Finnish giant Salcomp, American companies, Sanmina and Flex and the Taiwanese company Foxconn. Even in the heavy fabrication line at elevators major Kone, I notice women in increasing numbers.

In my visits across the state I noticed project managers with engineering degrees and experience heading several SIPCOT project offices, establishing rapport with dozens of industrial units and enjoying reputation for their efficient work. In the day-long seminars we organised at the IIT-M Research Park on Turbocharged Tamil Nadu, an entire session was devoted to women empowerment addressed by five distinct women leaders.

The icing on the cake is seen in leadership at the policymaking level in Tamil Nadu. look at the officers from the IAS cadre heading major development corporations of the state:

  • Jayashree Muralidharan, Special Secretary-Industry, taking additional charge as CMD, Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO)
  • Vandana Garg, Executive Director, TIDCO
  • Pooja Kulkarni, Managing Director & CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu, Asha Ajith, Executive Director, Guidance Tamil Nadu
  • R Gajalakshmi, Managing Director, Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd (SIDCO)

Menfolk, beware!
