The CS Rankings system assesses universities purely on research productivity, using data from DBLP (Digital Bibliography & Library Project). It focuses on faculty publications in top-tier conferences, assigning credit based on the quality of venues and authorship contribution. No institutional submissions are accepted, making it one of the most transparent and objective global benchmarks for computer science research.

BITS Pilani’s current standing at number 9 places us firmly among the leading institutions in Computer Science research in the country. It is a testimony to the commitment and excellence of our faculty across campuses.”
A significant factor in the improvement has been the output from the Anuradha and Prashanth Palakurthi Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (APPCAIR), set up in 2020 through a USD 1 million endowment from alumni. The centre has emerged as a hub for research in areas including generative AI, machine learning, probabilistic modelling, natural language processing, computer vision and autonomous systems.
Prof. Snehanshu Saha, Head of APPCAIR, said, “APPCAIR’s mission is to conduct high-quality, focused research in AI and to be a nursery for training future generations of skilled and responsible data scientists”. He added that the centre aims to expand into interdisciplinary areas, invest in faculty development and strengthen collaborations with industry and government bodies.
The institution was placed 10th in 2023–24 and 15th in 2024. The latest ranking positions BITS Pilani ahead of several established research institutions, including IITs, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), ISI Kolkata, Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), DA-IICT and IIIT Bangalore.
BITS Pilani is one of the first six institutions in India to be declared an Institution of Eminence and remains the only private university identified by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to host a Technology Innovation Hub under the Bio-CPS vertical, supported by a Rs 125 crore grant. The university today serves more than 18,000 students, including 2,000 doctoral scholars, across its campuses in Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.
