Yelagiri – A rustic hideout

Listen to this article

Yelagiri, a rustic hideout I visited 20 years ago, has blossomed into a soulful habitat that blends nature’s beauty with commerce. My latest journey began with professional work at Jolarpet, but an unforgettable break in Yelagiri followed. I checked into my home away from home, Sterling.

My first stop was Fundera Park, where exotic birds and animals roam. You can get up close and personal with them, and some even let you interact! The park boasts farm animals, including the fascinating Ostriches and Emus. For the thrill-seekers, there’s net cricket and a 7D cinema. And if you’re a pet lover, the pet farm with chickens, rabbits, hamsters, and pigeons will warm your heart. There are playful ducks, goats, small donkeys, and ponies! The highlight was the aviary, where brightly coloured birds flew right up to you, making some visitors shriek and others laugh. At Rs 350, the entry fee is steep, but the experience will leave the kids zapped.

The following morning, we set off to the Punganoor Lake and Park, and boy, was it mesmerizing? The lake’s crystal-clear water was too inviting to resist, and a short boat ride soothed our souls. The park was a feast for the senses, with vibrant flora and well-manicured gardens. As we strolled through the pathways, the sweet chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves embraced us with nature’s melody.

Next up was the enchanting Yelagiri Nature Park, a vast oasis of lush greenery and refreshing scents. The park’s charming waterfall added a melodic touch to the atmosphere. I lost track of time and distance as I walked the endless trails. A perfect day was wrapped up with delectable treats at the eatery. A musical fountain is played out on select days, but this was not that day!

Although I missed the Swamimalai Hills viewpoint due to the enthusiastic dogs that came along the way, I’m keeping it on my list for next time. People say it offers an awe-inspiring sunrise and a breathtaking canvas of rolling hills and verdant valleys.

That evening I set off to the AR Thanga Kottai! Getting there was an adventure, with a scary road that tested my driving skills. However, the moment I stepped inside, it felt like I had entered a movie set. The entry fee of Rs 350 was steep, given that no guides were around, but if you love architecture, go there.

We bid farewell to Yelagiri and set out to the Jalagamparai Waterfalls. The picturesque roads guided us through lush landscapes until we reached the slender falls cascading gracefully down the rocks. It’s a short trek to reach the falls, so wear comfortable shoes and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. A peaceful temple nearby added a spiritual touch, and the playful monkeys were annoying for my taste.

During a morning stroll, we stumbled upon a delightful surprise – a roadside tea shop run by a postgraduate with an M.Ed. degree! Her decision to set up the shop paid off, and she now enjoys a thriving business that brings in Rs 30,000 a month! Her contentment was evident as she proudly accepted payments through G-Pay.

Yelagiri has indeed transformed for the better, and it now welcomes travellers with an unforgettable blend of nature’s embrace, cultural richness, and heart-warming encounters. So, don’t wait any longer – pack your bags, head to Yelagiri, and let this delightful haven weave its magic on your soul! It’s time to make memories that will stay etched in your heart forever. Let’s go!
