The agreement covers the supply of 32 trainsets, each comprising three cars, along with a 15-year comprehensive maintenance package.

According to a statement, the metro cars will be entirely manufactured in India — designed at Alstom’s engineering center in Bengaluru and produced at its advanced manufacturing facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

Each three-car trainset will have a capacity of up to 900 passengers and feature cutting-edge technologies to ensure enhanced safety, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort. The trains will support driverless operations and include emergency evacuation capabilities.

“This contract reinforces our long-standing partnership with CMRL,” said Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India.

CMRL’s Phase II expansion spans 119 kilometers, comprising more than 76 km of elevated corridors and 43 km underground, across three main lines. The project is aimed at improving urban mobility for Chennai’s population of over 11 million.

Alstom is already producing 108 driverless metro cars for another Phase II segment connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House via 30 stations. Since its initial engagement with CMRL in 2010, the company has delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I and collaborated with Larsen & Toubro on over 86 km of track infrastructure.

With the latest order, Alstom further consolidates its position in India’s urban transit landscape, where one in every three metro cars in service is manufactured by the company.
