Despite these headwinds, India’s auto retail sector registered a modest 5% year-on-year growth in May. While headline numbers painted a cautiously positive picture, the underlying dynamics told a more complex story—one shaped by rural resilience, tightening finance, and rising global uncertainties.
According to FADA President C. S. Vigneshwar, growth in May was driven by strong performances in the two-wheeler (7.3%), three-wheeler (6.2%), and tractor (2.7%) segments. However, the passenger vehicle (PV), commercial vehicle (CV), and construction equipment (CE) categories saw year-on-year declines of 3.1%, 3.7%, and 6.3%, respectively.
Two-wheeler sales, although down 2.02% month-on-month, maintained a healthy 7.31% year-on-year increase. Dealers attributed the strength in semi-urban and rural markets to auspicious marriage dates, a favorable Rabi harvest, and pre-monsoon demand. Still, financing challenges in the economy segment tempered potential gains.

Commercial vehicle sales dropped 11.25% month-on-month and 3.71% year-on-year amid muted freight demand, liquidity constraints, and an overall cautious business climate. While bus sales offered slight relief, cargo and commodity-linked segments, including cement and coal, saw sharp declines. Dealers also reported an uptick in inventory build-up ahead of the mandatory air-conditioned driver cabin regulations set to take effect in June 2025.
Near term outlook
Despite challenges, macroeconomic indicators suggest a stable foundation. India’s Q4 FY25 GDP held near 6.5%, and inflation appears to be stabilizing toward the RBI’s 4% target. The India Meteorological Department’s forecast of a monsoon at 106% of the long-period average points to better rural liquidity and higher farm incomes—positive signs for tractor and two-wheeler segments.
Additionally, a widely anticipated repo rate cut could provide relief to both customers and dealerships by lowering borrowing costs. Government support in the form of a 3% MSP hike for kharif crops is also expected to boost rural purchasing power.
