The pent up demand for travel caused by the Covid-19 pandemic seems to be resulting in a huge surge in tourism. Railways, even at the best of times, struggle to meet with the surge in tourist travel. Airline services that were starved of custom during the two years of pandemic, seems to witness demand peaking by the day.
This is not just confined to India.
During my visit to the US in June 2022, I witnessed whole populations flying especially during the three-day long week-ends. The Independence Day week-end witnessed a peak 2.5 million air passengers screened, with 25,000 daily flights – a record in 28 months.
This demand witnessed a huge jump in airfares and hotel tariffs. The travel industry that suffered huge losses through the pandemic is making merry over this revival.
