Off Boards: Schooling Reinvented

In 1998, a young educationist with a background in psychology and rehabilitation sciences set up a modest school in Mettupalayam, Tamil Nadu, with just 25 children. Her vision was not about scale but about holistic education that offers the possibility to nurture intellect and character. That small beginning, over 27 years has transformed into the SSVM Group of Institutions, serving more than 12,000 students across 15 campuses.

AT THE HEART of this journey is Dr. Manime­kalai Mohan, Founder and Managing Trustee of SSVM Group of Institutions. Recognised with multiple global and national honours like the Global Education Leader Award in the USA to the EduTitan Award in New Delhi, her story reflects how resilience and adaptability can help reimagine the way India educates its children.

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES WITH RESILIENCE
When Dr. Manimekalai founded SSVM, her intent was clear: to provide education that was not limited to textbooks or examinations. Over time, this has evolved into a multi-curriculum ecosystem, offering CBSE, IB, Cambridge International, NIOS and Tamil Nadu State Board (Matriculation) pro­grammes. “We ensure every child finds their right direction,” she explained. This adaptability lies at the core of SSVM’s philosophy, embracing diversity in learning styles, while holding onto the values of empa­thy, ethics and creativity. The outcome is evident. SSVM today hous­es award-winning preschools, day schools, and residential campuses that consistently rank among India’s best. Its Ruh Continuum School, for instance, is celebrated for curricu­lum innovation, while SSVM World School has been lauded for green infrastructure and international standards.

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES WITH RESILIENCE
The road to this scale was not without hur­dles. “Convincing families that education could be holistic, not just exam-driven was the biggest challenge in the ear­ly days,” recalled Dr. Manimekalai. Infrastructure, finances and balancing multiple curricula tested her lead­ership. But for her, every obstacle became a stepping stone. She be­lieved leadership was about turning difficulties into growth opportunities and this mindset has allowed the institution to stand the test of time.

India’s young population is entering a global economy shaped by AI, automation, and climate change. For Dr. Manimekalai, this calls for a radical shift in priorities. She re­marked, “knowledge alone is no longer enough. Students must learn to adapt, think critically and collaborate across disciplines.” At SSVM, digi­tal literacy, sustainability and problem-solving are treated as core skills. Teachers are encour­aged to move from being mere transmitters of content to facilitators of inquiry. The objective is not just academic rigour but readiness for a world where adaptability and compassion are as important as technical know-how.

BRIDGING THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC DIVIDE
One of India’s pressing education challenges remains the wide gap between private and gov­ernment schools. Dr. Manimekalai sees this as a collective responsibility, “private institutions like SSVM must share resources, expertise and innovations with government schools. Education must be a collective mission, where privilege is balanced with purpose.” SSVM has initiated teacher training, joint programmes and community engagement that extend be­yond its own campuses. By doing so, it aims to create an ecosystems rather than simply polish its own image.

LEADERSHIP WITH EMPATHY
Beyond policy and pedagogy, Dr. Manimeka­lai’s leadership reflects her unique identity as a woman founder in a traditionally male-dom­inated sector. She sees strength in empathy, patience and the ability to nurture growth. Her advice to young girls, “dream boldly, learn continuously and adapt to every change with courage. Leadership is not about perfection, it is about purpose and resilience.” This phi­losophy has earned her recognition not just as an educator but also as a role model for women leaders in India.
