The PRAGATI initiative was launched in 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the chronic problem of large time and cost overruns in India’s public projects and welfare schemes. The PRAGATI mechanism deploys a technology-based platform for Project Monitoring, Citizens’ Grievance Redressal and Reviewing Scheme implementation through active collaboration of Central Ministries and State Governments.
The initiative aimed at improving Centre-Centre and Centre-State coordination in order to fast-track critical infrastructure projects facing Issues and Bottlenecks. It also focused on improving outcomes in flagship schemes showing sub-optimal performance or requiring structural reforms and assessing and resolving citizen grievances across sectors.
Prime Minister chairs PRAGATI review meetings directly with Chief Secretaries of States & Secretaries of Central Ministries/Departments to address issues in specific Projects & Schemes.
50 such review meetings have been held so far, as per a presentation made by the Cabinet Secretary and the other Departmental Secretaries in a media briefing on Friday.
