Hyundai: SUV share hits record high
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) recorded domestic sales of 43,973 units in July 2025, driven by strong SUV sales, which contributed a record 71.8% of total domestic volumes—the highest ever for the company.
The milestone coincided with the 10th anniversary of the SUV Creta, which continues to lead the mid-SUV space with over 1.2 million units sold since its 2015 launch. Including exports, Hyundai’s total sales stood at 60,073 units.
Despite acknowledging some softness in the industry, HMIL’s Whole-time Director and COO Tarun Garg remained optimistic about demand recovery in the upcoming festive season, backed by strong supply and new offerings.
Mahindra: Strong momentum from new SUVs
Mahindra & Mahindra reported robust growth in July, with UV sales rising 20% YoY to 49,871 units. The surge was fueled by new models such as the XUV 3XO ‘REVX’ series and BE electric models.
Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of M&M’s Automotive Division, credited the company’s performance to recent successful launches and expressed confidence in sustaining the growth momentum.
Tata Motors and Toyota: Divergent trends
Tata Motors’ domestic PV sales, including EVs, stood at 39,521 units in July 2025, down from 44,725 units in the same month last year. In contrast, Toyota reported a 3% YoY increase in domestic sales, rising to 32,575 units from 31,656 units.
Kia India: Growth boosted by EV entry
Kia India reported domestic sales of 22,135 units in July 2025, an 8% increase over the previous year. The growth was attributed to the launch of the Carens Clavis and its EV variant.
The company’s Chief Sales Officer Joonso Cho noted the strong market reception to the Clavis EV, positioning it as a promising player in the mass-market EV segment.
Outlook
According to rating agency ICRA, inventory levels rose marginally to around 55 days by the end of June 2025, as per data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). ICRA noted that sport utility vehicles (SUVs) continued to dominate the passenger vehicle (PV) market, contributing 65–66% of total volumes, and are expected to remain the primary volume drivers in the near term.
