What 1000 Talks Taught Me

The first time I stood in front of an audience, my biggest fear was my voice. My heart was racing faster than my thoughts. I remember holding the microphone tightly. That day, I spoke too fast, avoided eye contact and finished my talk with a mix of relief and embarrassment.

That moment became the starting of one of the most powerful skills I have built in my life. Today, after delivering more than 1000 public talks I can confidently say that public speaking is a skill you build.

Why Public Speaking Matters
Warren Buffett once said that public speaking is the single most important skill that can dramatically increase a person’s value. He even mentioned that improving communication skills can increase your professional worth by 50 percent. In a world where people compete on degrees, experience and technology, the ability to express ideas confidently and convincingly is an advantage. I realised that if I wanted to grow as a professional, I could no longer afford to hide behind fear.

It happened slowly, but surely. Early on, I accepted every opportunity that came my way. Most were unpaid. But each one gave me something invaluable: practice. With every session, I became a little better. My pauses improved. My confidence slowly replaced fear. I learnt that audiences are not there to judge you but to learn from you. Over time, public speaking transformed from a fear into a strength.

The Real Power of Public Speaking
Public speaking improved my articulation and increased my professional visibility. Opportunities came not because I was the most qualified, but because I could communicate ideas with clarity. More importantly, it allowed me to inspire others who once stood where I stood. If you are someone who avoids speaking up in meetings, hesitates to present, or fears the stage, remember this: every confident speaker you admire, once stood exactly where you are today. Public speaking is not about being perfect. It is about being prepared and present.
