Flexible labour laws…

Nirmala Sitharaman earned in quick time a reputation for clear articulation and quick repartees in television debates. That was not surprising, given her background as a debater at college.

In her address at the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce, she explained the focus of her government as expanding the manufacturing sector, bringing down inflation and lifting the economy to a higher growth trajectory: “the plan is to liberalise labour laws. We have identified several sectors for special focus. Tamil Nadu has strong base in textiles, leather, automobiles and auto parts, engineering goods as also in IT,” she said. Of special interest to Tamil Nadu is an assurance to decongest and improve the turnaround of vessels at the three major ports, setting up a single window mechanism for dealing with investments as also moving toward self-certification and away from controls.

Executive Vice Chairman Cognizant Technology Solutions, R Chandrasekaran, referred to his company providing software at the lowest cost per transaction for the National Stock Exchange and also for banking services.  Bharat Joshi, Deputy High Commissioner for Britain in Chennai referred to UK as the cheapest cost economy in Europe. Britain also has the highest diplomatic corps in India with three deputy commission in south India, he said.

N R Dave, a civil engineering graduate from IIT-Madras with five decades of experience in civil construction, has taken charge as the President of the Chamber for 2014-15. The Chamber is packed with events for the forth coming year.
