Doing business is not so easy in Chennai

AFTER THE stupendous success of the Global Investors Meet, one expects Tamil Nadu to top in business indexes. But the

recent report of World Bank on ease of doing business states the opposite.

Chennai ranked 15 among 17 cities followed by Kochi and Kolkata while Ludhiana topped the list. Under the ease of

doing business category, Chennai ranked 10th. It takes about 34 days for a small startup with 50 employees to get registered here while the national average is 26 days.

Under the ‘Paying Taxes’ metric, Chennai ranks lowest. There are about 68 tax payments to be made in a year and it takes about 292 hours a year to file the papers.

The saving grace was the second and third ranking for cross-border trading and dealing with construction permits respectively. This shocking ranking provides an opportunity for the state to revamp and upgrade it systems to improve its business environment.
