With the summer approaching, Blue Star Ltd is rapidly gearing up for the launch of new models and expanding its range. The vastly improved power position is an additional favourable factor for manufacturers of refrigeration equipment.

Blue Star forayed into the residential segment in 2011 and has been making steady and good progress. B Thiagarajan (BT), Joint Managing Director, told the media that his company has been growing at around 30 per cent in the current year and hopes to expand its market share to 12. 5 per cent in FY 2018. The current size of the market for room air-conditioners is estimated at five million units. BT estimates that this will double to 10 million units over the next three years.

There have been increasing levels of sophistication in the products offered: Blue Star offers around 135 models of room air-conditoners with tonnages ranging from 0.7 TR to 4.5 TR across 2-star, 3-star and 5-star ratings. There is a complete line-up of split air conditioners which cool in summers and heat in winters and are equipped with wi-fi features enabling the user to operate the machine from anywhere. The five star models are designed to set temperatures in steps of 0.5 degree C (instead of 1 degree C), a first of its kind in the market. Blue Star plans to spend over Rs 33 crore on new product development, research and design initiatives. In addition to its two existing manufacturing units in Himachal Pradesh, the company plans to set up two more facilities at Samba in Jammu and at Sri City in AP.
