An industry institution link…

To improve the quality of engineering education, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has joined hands with the Confederation of Indian Industry to set up the ‘QEEE-CII Industry Bridge Programme.’ CII will bring in experts from industry to interact with engineering students, guided by the faculty from IITs. A third of the courses, which are common and fundamental, will be taught through broadband internet and DTH.

The programme includes live classes, tutorials, virtual labs, bridge programmes and open online courses. Brainchild of Prof. Ashok JhunJhunwala, Chairman, Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE), nearly 140 engineering colleges across India, with 13 in Tamil Nadu are participating in the programme. Industry-oriented inputs will be provided by TCS, CTS, Siemens, BPCL, ONGC, Saint Gobain, Hyundai, Ford, Microsoft...

The courses begun in August 2014, aim to reach students from 500 engineering colleges.

Lauding the programme, B Santhanam,  Immediate Past Chairman, CII Southern Region and President, Flat Glass, South Asia, Egypt, said: “Through this programme students will see the relevance of what is being taught and get motivated.”

Dr Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT-M, said: “20 teachers from IIT-M are involved in this programme to train 40,000 students. A ten-fold increase i.e. five per cent of the total IIT faculty base, will be able to reach 400, 000 students! This is a scalable operation requiring bare minimum technology.”
