Wouldn’t the Mahatma like clean restrooms in our cities!
October is when we remember Mahatma Gandhi! The thought of him brings to my mind thoughts of public hygiene and public restrooms. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the standard at 1 public restroom per 100 residents. Going by that, Bhubaneswar should have 10,000 loos; in reality there are not even a hundred! Out of the functional ones not even one can pass as hygienic test.

Alas, in 21st century Odisha, if a cultured lady has to answer nature’s call with dignity, she has little other option than returning home! Conscientious reporters, particularly women, have started making appropriate noise to draw attention to this.

The problem will be partly solved, when the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, constructs 21 public restrooms across the city, as per their plans. Beyond that, I hope someone sees a business opportunity in this to redeem the situation. That would be a fitting tribute to Mohandas Gandhi.
