M & M unveils driverless technology for tractors

Leading tractor firm Mahindra & Mahindra (M & M) has come out with its indigenously developed driverless technology for tractors.

Designed and developed at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) near Chennai, the tractor equipped with this technology can be programmed to carry out specific tasks and can also be operated remotely to perform in the field.

The technology is expected to help small farmers achieve better operational efficiencies for tasks such as planting, spraying, and harvesting. The overall objective is to make farming more productive and profitable, reduce health hazard for farmers and change the future of food production, among others.

The commercial launch of this tractor is expected in early 2018.  However, the first product will be automated, steering-assisted tractors, followed by quasi-driverless tractors and a complete driverless tractor over phases.

“This technology has developed for the Indian farm and tractor sizes, and we are bringing these technologies that are available to larger farmers in developed markets to small farmers in India,” said PawanGoenka, Managing Director.
