Mu Sigma – is no more

I first met M S Srinivasan (MSS) in the 1967 at Ranchi. He was working in the public relations department of Hindustan Steel. He gave me a superb introduction to the Indian steel industry and lined up meetings with the chairman and other senior executives of HSL. His rich knowledge of the steel sector was used by posting him subsequently at Durgapur Steel, MECON, Kudremukh Iron Ore Co and Salem Steel. I could follow the evolution of HSL into Steel Authority of India Ltd passionately built by Mohan Kumaramangalam and Wadud Khan. In my several visits to the SAIL steel plants, few of these like Bokaro and Kudremukh from the beginning, I spent time with MSS and benefitted by his profound insights into men and matters. He has written several features on steel for IE. 

MSS worked during the exciting construction phase of Kudremukh Iron Ore Co, which was built by K C Khanna and his team to a tight schedule. He used to provide regular information on this giant project to mine and beneficiate low-grade magnetite iron ore, transfer it through the pipeline in slurry form to Mangalore Port and to be exported to Iran on a long-term contract (sadly, the overthrow of the Shah of Iran almost killed the project). 

Mu Sigma, as we know him, had in-depth knowledge of Tamil literature. He used to recount the discussions at TKC’s Vatta Thotti and could write in Tamil with a literary flourish. Keenly interested in music, he spotted early the genius of Kadri Gopinath who emerged a maestro in saxophone. 

Srinivasan, who, with his passion for the steel sector and with his communication skills, effectively promoted the cause of Indian steel, is no more.
