Focus on quality of power - its only around 170-180V

The power position in Tamil Nadu has recorded perceptible improvement. The nightmarish shortages of 2012 have been pushed back. The scheduled cuts in supply have been withdrawn and the state has been free from this for over three months now. However, there are serious issues relating to the quality of supply. In several parts of the city, the voltage for three-phase supply drops to 350-370v against the required 440v. Correspondingly, for the single phase the drop is to 170-180v against the promised 220 v. This causes serious damage to the large number of electrical appliances, which have become part of life. The AIADMK government has been supplying free several lakh of grinders, mixies and fans   as part of its election manifesto. These could not be put to effective use during the severe power shortages of 2011 and 2012. Today, these and the several lakh colour TVs provided by the DMK government suffers damage owing to low voltage.

An engineer from the TANTRANSCO admitted to the low voltage and pointed out: “against the 11 kv a street transformer should receive from the grid, it receives only 9kv. Against a few dozen consumers in a street in the past, the number of consumers has increased to a few hundred. Almost every plot has been converted into a multistoreyed building. We need much larger allocations for strengthening the power transmission and distribution system. Chairman of TANGEDCO and TANTRANSCO

K Gnanadesikan has earned reputation for his remarkable work in helping the state tide over the crisis of severe shortages that arose from two decades of serious neglect of investments in power generation. He should give equal attention to step up investments in transmission and distribution as well.
