Delhi returns to BJP

It was a clean sweep at Delhi; the BJP won all the seven seats convincingly defeating both Congress and the AAP which fared well in its first elections to the state assembly. The AAP committed the folly of spreading its resources thin. AAP opted to contest 400 seats even larger than BJP’s! Without any large organisation structure,  Kejriwal & Co tried to take on leaders of BJP and Congress. It did have a lot of publicity value but no gains.

Likewise, the party fielded all and sundry across the country without checking their credentials. In southern Tamil Nadu AAP fielded three candidates with anti-Kudankulam bias on the strength of lawyer Prashant Bhushan’s persuasion. There was widespread anger against these for protesting the power plant causing humongous losses and delays. Not surprisingly, these men lost their deposits.

In the metros and major towns including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, AAP candidates lost. The only consolation was offered by Punjab where the anti-incumbency factor and the division of votes among Congress, the BJP-Akali Dal and AAP helped the party win four seats.

AAP would not deliver on its promise in Delhi. It refused to recognise the changed role demanded to govern Delhi as the party in power and not continue with the tactics of street fights. The Delhi legislature is under suspended animation. BJP may like to ride on the present wave of popularity and organise elections in quick time.
