Situated 40 km south-west of Chennai, Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district was revered as the birthplace of Sri Ramanujar. The revolutionary religious leader spread vaishnavism among the masses. It has today become a pilgrimage centre of modern industrial temples. The Sriperumbudur-Irungattukottai cluster on NH 4 has several MNCs dotting the landscape with a strong presence of automobile and electronic companies. These include Hyundai Motors, Dell, Samsung and Motorola among others; earlier, Nokia-Foxconn built the largest cell phone production unit.
Hyundai Motors’ sprawling 535 acre complex triggered the second auto revolution after Maruti. It helped Tamil Nadu emerge a major auto export hub. The company produces over 600,000 cars a year. Of these, a third, over 200,000, are exported with large numbers going to European countries. There is a high degree of automation with hundreds of robots taking care of safe, accurate and speedy welding and ensuring high productivity. The assembly line is a maze of systems that convey parts for assembly to precision. Productivity is extremely high with a worker turning out 150 cars every year!
HMIL receives components and sub-assemblies from around 140 vendors. These include 42 Korean companies located around the plant delivering parts by the hour.
Started in 2007, the Dell plant produces desktops, laptops and servers. Making 3500 equipments per day, Dell hires twelfth standard pass-outs for packaging and engineering, ITI and diplomas for technical roles.
Saint-Gobain has a 1200 tonne per day float glass plant. The company manufactures and markets solar control glass, fire resistant glass, safety glasses for automobiles.
The 350 year old French company has a second large plant in Gujarat and another state-of-the-art plant at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
The industry cluster has emerged the largest in the state, recording one of the fastest growth. Its success triggered development in quick time, of nearby Oragadam.
Sriperumbudur is slated for further big push with plans of constructing Chennai's second modern, large airport.
