Rahul Gandhi, often dismissed as Pappu by his detractors, including those in government, has been making headlines recently following his 150-day-long Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY).

The padayatra, which took him across 12 states and 2 Union Territories, was a defining moment for Gandhi and his political career. Despite being criticised by the ruling BJP and its leaders, Gandhi has emerged as a charismatic leader, determined to tackle pressing issues and to unite the nation against hate and prejudice.

Journey towards secularism

The journey was meant to provide a voice to the common man and raise awareness about the importance of social justice and secular unity. Secularism, by which India has sworn post-independence, has been in danger following strident noises about the creation of a Hindu Rashtra.

Gandhi spoke at each rally, challenging the national government for being chummy with big capitalists and shunning the common man. He even went on to name the industrialists who he felt received unfair enrichment. The response from the public was overwhelmingly positive, and Gandhi’s marathon will be remembered as a critical moment in contemporary Indian politics. Even nothing, it would go down as, when the reluctant politician tried his best.

Journey towards rebranding

Gandhi rebranded himself as a serious politician. His journey has been praised for its discipline and determination, and supporters see it as a turning point in his political career. In a way, the image of an immature and disconnected prince is gone.

The BJY has marked the arrival of a new Gandhi, one who is ready to provide a responsible alternative to the BJP. It repositions Gandhi as a fearless leader in taking on the powerful government at a time when India has forgotten the art of conversation and debate. But despite everything, it remains to be seen whether Gandhi and his party can convert this momentum into votes.

Journey towards commitment

As Gandhi hoisted the national flag at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk on Jan 29th, a day ahead of the 75th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, it was a moment of triumph. In short, the Bharat Jodo Yatra has been a defining moment for Indian politics.

The BJY has marked the arrival of a new Gandhi, serious about rejuvenating the Congress from a decay.
