IE: Your view on TN topping in women industrial workers in the nation?
Ashok Leyland (ALL): As India grapples with the need for greater gender inclusivity in its workforce, Tamil Nadu emerges as a beacon of success in breaking down barriers and promoting equality. This also sets example for others to emulate, in providing equal opportunities for women in employment. The leadership position in this regard, is indicative of a conducive environment that empowers and supports women in pursuing careers even in traditionally male-dominated fields.

IE: What works in TN, that contributes to this number?
ALL: One, the government’s policies and initiatives aimed at promoting gender diversity in the workplace. These include targeted programmes to encourage women pursue careers in the manufacturing sector, providing them with necessary skills and support.
Two, the state’s success may be indicative of a cultural and societal environment that encourages and supports women’s participation in traditionally male-dominated fields. This could be a result of both awareness campaigns and a broader societal shift towards recognising the importance of gender equality. When women perceive that they have equal opportunities and are supported in their career pursuits, it fosters a conducive environment for their active participation.

Three, this could also be attributed to the industry collaborations that aim to address specific challenges faced by women in the manufacturing sector. Support networks, mentorship programmes and policies focused on work-life balance may be contributing factors that create an atmosphere where women feel valued and empowered in their professional roles.

IE: A brief on your all-women line and the impact it has created on your business and the community.
ALL: At Ashok Leyland, diversity and inclusion have always been a priority. We strongly believe that no job is defined by gender or ethinicity. Giving women these opportunities enhance not only their lives but also that of their families and the community.

In our pursuit of increasing women’s participation in the manufacturing sector, we established an all-female production line of 80 talented women at our Hosur plant and they are the driving force behind the new engine line production. This has created a more balanced gender landscape and initiatives like this, are instrumental in creating a more inclusive ecosystem.

IE: What are few government actions that have boosted women’s employment in industry?
ALL: Government policies encouraging skill development and education for women in industries has ensured that women have necessary qualifications and training to thrive. These policies include targeted programmes, providing financial assistance, scholarships or vocational training opportunities for women, thereby enhancing their employability.

Moreover, the state has introduced affirmative action measures or reserved quotas for women in certain industries, ensuring a minimum representation and creating a level playing field. Such policies can be instrumental in breaking down systemic barriers and biases.

IE: In a service organisation, when work from home was revoked, women employees quit in large numbers. What can the service industry learn from the manufacturing sector?
ALL: Leyland’s commitment to promoting work-life balance, women’s leadership, and creating a supportive environment for women to thrive in their careers is reflected in our comprehensive policies and initiatives. This approach recognises the unique needs and challenges faced by women in the workforce and aims to address them proactively.
By implementing such practices, organisations in the service industry can enhance employee satisfaction, reduce attrition rates and contribute to the overall success of their workforce.

IE: How can women’s skills be enhanced to promote them from shop floor to managerial positions?
ALL: A comprehensive approach is necessary. Focused skill development programmes must be launched to train women in both technical capabilities and leadership skills pertinent to managerial positions. Simultaneously, mentorship initiatives that pair together ambitious women with seasoned managers, can offer priceless advice and perspectives.
Encouraging a work environment that challenges prejudices and preconceptions while valuing diversity, inclusivity and equal opportunity is crucial. It is imperative to adopt gender-neutral promotion processes, flexible work schedules and family-friendly policies in order to fairly progress women’s careers and meet their different demands.
The advancement of women from the shop floor to managerial roles can be aided by the provision of networking opportunities and regular performance reviews with feedback specific to leadership potential. This will foster a more varied and dynamic industrial workforce.

IE: What social and economic impact does employing women bring?
ALL: On the social front, it serves as a catalyst for gender empowerment by challenging traditional roles and fostering inclusivity. As women progress from the shop floor to managerial positions, it not only symbolises strides in gender equality but also inspires a broader societal shift, encouraging more women to pursue careers in male dominated fields and dismantling ingrained gender stereotypes.
From an economic standpoint, the integration of women into the manufacturing workforce enhances overall productivity and innovation. The diverse perspectives and skills, women bring to the table contribute to a more dynamic and creative work environment. Utilisation of the female workforce addresses labour shortages, resulting in a more resilient and skilled manufacturing sector. This, in turn, contributes significantly to the economic growth.
Promoting women to managerial roles has economic implications by fostering more equitable resource distribution and addressing the gender wage gap. The social and economic impact of employing women extends beyond the workplace, influencing societal perceptions and playing a pivotal role in shaping a balanced and prosperous society.
