Boozing and driving

India ranks top in the list of road accidents. With the second largest road network in the world, around 40 per cent of the accidents are due to drunk driving. In India, Tamil Nadu tops with the most number of accidents. Around 15 per cent of all accidents in the country happen in the state every year. Chennai tops in Tamil Nadu.

In 2013, around 57,962 drunk driving cases were registered. This was a 243 per cent increase when compared to 2012. With more number of TASMAC shops coming under roofs, drunk driving has become a common affair. The Chennai traffic police booked 160 cases of drunk driving on a single night.

Last year, to curb drunk driving, Chennai Traffic Police joined hands with Zara Tapas Bar in Chennai to create awareness on this problem. They had roped in Lord Yama as the brand ambassador. People who drunk and chose to drive their car were greeted by a surprise guest in their car, Lord Yama himself! Several people’s reactions were captured and a short film of this was uploaded on Youtube which instantly became viral. The initiative was to drive home the message of Yama, “Drink and get driven,” whereby boozers were asked to at least request for a call driver.
