Apart from this, Grundfos is also looking to enter the Zero Liquid Discharge market in India. Some of the key automobile manufacturing clients of Grundfos India include Ashok Leyland, Honda, Hyundai, Mahindra, Maruti and Tata Motors. There are also other major auto clients like BMW, Ford, Mercedes, Toyota and Volvo… in other countries which come under global agreement.

“There is significant increase in costs due to energy intake in the area of vehicle production every year. Our expert solutions and products are accurate, reliable and energy efficient which can assist the automobile companies to drive in a greener future,” said Shankar.

Earlier automakers would consume 800 litres of water for manufacturing one car. With the use of Grundfos Pumps, amount of water consumed can be reduced to 500 litres per car. Spread across the globe Grundfos manufacturing 16 million pumps a year and holds 16 per cent market share in the automobile sector alone, with 12-15 per cent of revenue coming from this segment.

Shankar said: “one segment in the automotive industry we haven’t entered so far is the painting sequence. Now we are all set to have a strong presence in that too.”

So far the company has been largely manufacturing pumps for auto applications in machine tool industry. Now Grundfos is all set to manufacture pumps for the pre-treatment and painting process applications of the automobile industry, which accounts for 35 per cent of pumps used by an automaker.

On localisation of raw materials, Shankar said: “25-30 per cent of the raw materials are localised. We assemble those and sell it across the Indian subcontinent. Indian operation of Grundfos is responsible for selling products in Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives also.

Anyhow financials of Grundfos have been weaker since 2013. As on the end of Calendar year 2015, Grundfos reported a turnover of Rs 384 crore, which is flat against the 2013 and 2014 numbers.

Hence Grundfos is making use of the automobile exodus in the Indian market. Very soon this would create hefty competition in the pump manufacturing space as well. Already CRI Pumps, KSB Pumps, Shakti Pumps… are some of the well known pump manufacturers in India. With Grundfos’s strong presence in the automotive industry, their entry into the ZLD segment would further increase their presence in India as major textile units in Tirupur, Karur and other textile clusters are badly in need of a solution for ZLD.
