Empowering communities…
– Sahaana Sankar, VP, Hand in Hand India
Nowadays, everything we do and every decision we make is intricately linked to climate issues. Unfortunately, the impact is disproportionate and affects those at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder and marginalised communities, the most. This is where non-profit organisations like us step in. We engage in grassroots work and advocacy, implementing projects on the field and collaborating with both organisations and governments to bring about sustainable change.
Driving health and sustainability
For instance, we’ve collaborated with the government to upgrade health infrastructure such as anganwadis and hospitals. We’ve also been involved in tree planting, organic farming and solid waste management initiatives. These efforts are aimed at making a tangible impact in the communities we serve.
Waste management initiatives
Now, turning to the topic of the circular economy and our role within it, our activities in solid waste management and natural resource management align closely with the principles of circularity.
In solid waste management, our approach focuses on encouraging segregation of waste at its source. By working with municipalities and empowering local communities, particularly vulnerable groups like women, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills. Through initiatives such as waste-to-energy projects and empowering women to upcycle plastic waste, we not only address environmental concerns but also create economic opportunities.
Advocating for sustainability
Advocacy plays a crucial role alongside our ground efforts. We believe in educating and empowering the younger generation to become conscious citizens and future leaders who prioritise sustainability.
Restoring ecosystems by promoting organic farming
Moving on to natural resource management, our focus lies on regenerative farming practices and water conservation. By promoting organic farming and enhancing water storage capacity, we aim to restore balance to ecosystems and ensure communities have access to essential resources.
