Kudankulam nuclear plant generates 2GW

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu is currently generating 2,000 MW of electricity from its two operational units — KKNPP-1 and KKNPP-2 — each with a capacity of 1,000 MW, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the power generated from these central sector units has been allocated by the Ministry of Power to beneficiary states and union territories as per established norms.

The current power allocation from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project Units 1 and 2 stands at 925 MW for Tamil Nadu, 442 MW for Karnataka, 266 MW for Kerala, and 67 MW for Puducherry. An additional 300 MW remains in the unallocated pool.

Dr. Singh added that four additional reactors — Units 3 to 6 — each with a capacity of 1,000 MW, are under different stages of construction. Once completed, they will raise the total generation capacity of the Kudankulam site to 6,000 MW.

Decisions on the power allocation from Units 3 to 6 will be taken by the Ministry of Power at an appropriate time, he said.
