I notice an increasing interest by Taiwan in investing in India. Remember the initiative of Gopal Srinivasan in the early 2000s, in focusing on Taiwan in CII’s annual Connect events on the ICT sector?
Taiwan has been making great use of mainland China for setting up factories that employ in thousands for volume production of electronics and other goods. With increasing costs of labour in China as also on political considerations, Taiwan’s attention seems to be turning towards India.
IE presents in this issue, two of the Taiwaneese firms – Foxconn and Feng Tay – setting up large f actories in Tamil Nadu. I notice more such companies investing in India.
Leading interior decorator Ravi Subramanian, who recently visited Taiwan, confirms interest on the part of several Taiwaneese companies to set up shop in India. He referred to one such, Wistron to manufacture select models of i-Phone and electronic components at Narasapura in the Kolar district of Karnataka. In Phase I, Wistron will invest Rs 650 crore and employ 2500. The company plans to expand employment to 10,000 with a total investment of Rs 3000 crore to produce 100 million cell phones per annum.
