It surpassed Japan to become the third largest automobile market after the US and China. In October, major global automakers wrote fat cheques for their Indian expansion. South Korean major Hyundai Motor Group committed further investments of USD 15.5 billion from 2026 through 2032. The Group’s two carmakers-Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Kia India-have set up production capacity of over 1.4 million vehicles annually across the country. This includes Hyundai’s Chennai facility (824,000 units capacity) and Pune (170,000 units capacity) and Kia India’s Anantapur plant (431,000 units capacity). Besides, the group has also set up component and service operations through its affiliates including Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai Capital, Hyundai Wia and Hyundai Glovis. The seven-year investment spans manufacturing expansion, research and development (R&D) infrastructure development, local supplier cultivation for parts localisation and future technology innovation. The group will establish a dedicated investment entity in India to execute the proposed investment. It employs over 24,000 people in the country and the additional investment is expected to create more jobs. This will position India as one of the leading global export platforms for the Hyundai Group.
